Toasted Spice Cake

Toasted Spice Cake

1/3 c. Crisco
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. soda
2/3 c. sour milk
1 1/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Blend Crisco with sugar and egg yolk. Dissolve soda in sour milk. Add milk alternately with all sifted dry ingredients. Add vanilla. Mix until smooth. Pour into a Crisco and floured pan (7 inch square). Spread batter with Brown Sugar Meringue.

BROWN SUGAR MERINGUE
Beat 1 egg white until it holds a point but is not dry. Slowly add 1/2 cup sifted light brown sugar and continue beating until smooth. Spread meringue over raw cake batter. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of broken nutmeats (optional). Bake in moderate oven (325 degrees) for approximately 50 minutes or until done
