Betty Crocker's Best Chocolate Cake
I have tried numerous recipes for chocolate cake, and this is by far my
favorite. The buttermilk is the key ingredient; it makes a very tender and moist
cake.
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cups shortening
3/4 cups water
3/4 cups buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
4 ounce unsweetened, melted chocolate
Heat oven to 350?. Grease and flour cake pans. Beat all ingredients on low for
1/2 minute. Scrape bowl and beat on high for 3 minutes. Pour into pans. Bake:
45-50 minutes for oblong pan
30-35 minutes for round pans
50-55 minutes for bunt pan
Cool 10 minutes in pan before removing to rack.
You do not have to remove cake from an oblong pan. Just frost and serve from
pan.

Powdered buttermilk does not have to be mixed
separately. I just add the powder with my flour and the water with the my other
liquids and let it mix in the batter.
