I found the following recipe in a cookbook of my mother's recipes. I didn't have the fudge cake mix so I changed things. Here is the original recipe with my changes below.

Chocolate Cherry Cake

1 pkg. chocolate fudge cake mix
1-21 oz. can cherry pie filling
1 tsp. almond extract
2 eggs

Beat eggs and extract together. By hand, mix in cake mix and pie filling. The batter will be stiff. Bake in a greased 9 x 13 pan at 350 degrees until done (follow baking directions on cake mix box). This can be baked in muffin tins, following baking directions on the cake mix box.

Here is the frosting recipe that was with the cake recipe-I didn't use it. But for those who would like a frosting on their cake or muffins, here it is:

Frosting:
1 c. sugar
1/3 c. milk
5 T. butter
1 c. chocolate chips (butterscotch or vanilla chips for the spice/carrot cake mix)

Boil milk, sugar and butter for 2 minutes. Add chips, stirring until smooth. Pour over cake.

My variation:
I used a carrot cake mix (spice cake would be good, also) and lite apple pie filling. I used 1 t. vanilla and 1/2 t. apple pie spice. I baked this in a muffin tin and probably filled them too full. I
